เพื่อนไม่ไป ก็ไป Expedition คนเดียวที่ Antarctica ได้นะ ??

จากไทยบินไปลงที่ Buenos Aires, Argentina นะคะ แล้วต่อเครื่องลงไปที่ Ushuaia แนะนำให้ไปถึงก่อนเรือออกสักคืน สองคืน ตกเรือไม่ขำนะคะ จาก Ushuaia ก็ day trip ไปเที่ยวเล่นดู penguin ได้ หรือจะไป hiking ก็ได้ค่ะ บริษัทเรือส่วนใหญ่จะนัดประชุมเย็นวันก่อนเรือออกด้วย

ไปยังไง How to get there?
ช่วงฤดูร้อนของซีกโลกใต้จะมีเรือออกตั้งแต่ปลายตุลา ถึงประมาณ มีนา/เมษา เรือออกจากท่าที่ Ushuaia นะคะ ท่าเรือเล็กๆเลยค่ะ ผู้โดยสารจะต้องมารวมตัวกันที่ Bus stop เพื่อขึ้นบัสไปขึ้นเรือ ผู้ที่ไม่เกี่ยวค้องไม่สามารถเข้าไปในท่าได้

เรือไหนดี how to choose a cruise?
การเลือกเรือก็แล้วแต่งบและจำนวนวัน เรือมีตั้งแต่ budget cruise จนไปถึง super yacht เราจะไม่พูดถึงราคานะคะ ใครสะดวกแบบไหนก็ไปแบบนั้น เรือแพง ก็บริการหรูขึ้น อาหารดีขึ้น กิจกรรมรวมแล้วมากขึ้น เรือบางลำมี helicopter ด้วย

ระยะเวลา Cruise จะมีตั้งแต่ 8/9 วันขึ้นไป บางทริปเค้าไปกัน 3-4 อาทิตย์ก็มี ยิ่งไปนาน ก็ยิ่งลงใต้ไปได้ไกลกว่า Antarctic Peninsula ที่เราไป เรือของเรา 10 วันค่ะ 4 วันลอยอยู่กลางทะเล อีก 4 วันเป็น landing days ที่ทวิปแอนตาร์กติกา แล้วก็มีวันขึ้นลงเรือ

เราไปกับเรือ Hondius ที่เลือกเพราะเป็นเรือใหม่ มี satellite wifi ถึงจะต้องจ่ายก็เหอะ ยอมค่ะ มีดีกว่าไม่มี นอกจากนั้นเรือใหม่ระบบทุกอย่างก็ใหม่กว่า รองเท้าที่ให้ใช้ ห้องพัก ทักอย่างใหม่หมด เพิ่งใช้เป็น season แรก นอกจากความใหม่แล้ว เรือเล็ก นักท่องเที่ยวสามารถขึ้นฝั่งได้ทุกวัน วันละ 2 รอบ เรือใหญ่บางเรือเป็น cruise only ไม่มีการขี้นบกนะคะ ตอนจองอ่านดีๆ

อีกอย่างที่เลือกเรือนี้เพราะเป็นเรือ expedition ไม่ใช่ cruise liner ใหญ่ๆ ชอบความที่ expedition crew มีความรู้ แล้วมีการจัด lectures บนเรือตลอด อีกเหตุผลที่เลือกก็เพราะบริษัทนี้ sustainable ค่ะ เราไม่ค่อยโอเคกับเรือที่ทิ้งอาหารเยอะแยะ แล้วก็แจกน้ำขวดตลอด ไหนๆ ก็ carbon footprint อย่างเยอะแล้ว อะไรที่ช่วยสิ่งแวดล้อมได้ก็จะทำค่ะ

ราคาเรือจะถูกหน่อยถ้าจองสองปีล่วงหน้า หรือไม่ก็ last minute สักเดือน สองเดือนก่อน ใครมีเวลาจะไปรอเอาที่ Ushuaia ก็ได้ แต่ราคาไม่ต่างจากจองเดือนหนึ่งก่อนนะคะ เรือถูกสุดจะเป็นเรือจีนเหมา ใครไม่ mind ที่จะไปกับคนจีนอีก 200 ชีวิตก็เชิญได้ค่ะ เรือพวกนี้จะไม่ได้เปิดขายทั่วไป ต้องถาม agent ที่นั้นเอานะคะ

At Sea: Drake Passage..time to explore the Hondius
2 วันแรก และ 2 วันสุดท้ายจะเป็นวันเดินทางระหว่างทวีปอเมริกาใต้กับทวีป Antarctica เรือจะต้องผ่าน Drake Passage ซึ่งคือทะเลจาก Cape Horn ไปถึง South Shetland Islands น้ำตรงนั้นจะเป็นจุดที่มีการมาเจอกันของสองมหาสมุทร Pacific + Atlantic Ocean

ระยะทางทั้งหมด 800กม การเดินเรือในทะเลเปิด open sea ก็จะมีคลื่นเยอะหน่อย Drake Passage ขึ้นชื่อในการเป็น rough crossing ถ้าโชคร้ายอากาศไม่ดีก็จะเจอคลื่นสูงเกิน 4เมตร นั่งไปก็สนุกดีค่ะ เราเจอ swell สูงสุด 4.2เมตร ยังดีที่เรือมี stabilizer ที่ดี ไม่งั้นอาจจะอ้วกได้ มีหลายคนเหมือนกันที่เมาเรือ บางคนก็กินยากันไว้เลย เพราะเรือมันจะโครงเครง เหมือนนั่งเก้าอี้คุณปู่ rocking chair

ตลอดทางก็ไม่มีวิวอะไรให้ดูนะคะ มีนกให้เห็นบ้าง แต่ส่วนใหญ่ก็ไม่ค่อยมีอะไร เราแวะขึ้นไปที่ ship bridge เผื่อถ่ายรูป ไหนๆ เรือก็มี open bridge policy แล้ว ก็ขึ้นไปดูหน่อย ไม่ใช่ทุกเรือจะให้ขึ้นไปนะคะ ตอนเราไป captain ไม่อยู่ ก็เลยมีโอกาสได้ถ่ายรูปชิลๆ

นอกจากอ่านนั่งสือ ดู series เราก็กินๆนอนๆ ฟัง lecture  วนไป 2 วันค่ะ (ขากลับนั่งทำรูป) วันที่ 2 เค้าแจกอุปกรณ์ด้วย มีรองเท้าให้ยางให้ แล้วก็มีการทำความสะอาดเสื้อผ้าและกระเป๋าที่เราจะเอาลงไปใช้ที่ Antarctica เค้ากลัวมีพืชหรืออะไรติดไป แล้วไปทำลายระบบนิเวศของ Antarctica

  

ว่างๆเราก็มีโอกาสเดินสำรวจเรือด้วยนะ ห้องอาหารมีห้องเดียว กินเป็นเวลาพร้อมกันหมด เช้าปลุกทั้งเรือพร้อมกัน มีเวลาให้กิน 1 ชม พอเที่ยงเค้าก็จะประกาศเวลาเปิด แล้วก็ให้กิน 1 ชม เหมือนกัน สองมือนี้จะเป็นบุฟเฟ่ต์ ส่วนมื้อเย็นส่วนใหญ่จะเป็น sit-down dinner คือถ้าคุณไปคนเดียวอย่างเรา ยังไงก็มีเพื่อนค่ะ เพราะโต๊ะอาหารเป็น 4 ที่ซะส่วนมาก ก็นั่งรวมกับคนอื่นที่เดินทางคนเดียว แล้วก็ make friend ไปค่ะ 2 วันแรกก็ได้เพื่อนเยอะเลย แล้วหลังอาหารเย็น ก็จะไปนั่งเล่นก็ที่ห้องนั่งเล่น ซึ่งมีบาร์ ทางเรือก็มีไพ่และเกมต่างๆให้ยืมเล่น

หลังห้องนั่งเล่นก็มีห้องสมุด แล้วก็ lecture room ส่วนกลางก็มีแค่นั้นค่ะ นอกนั้นเป็นห้องนอน เรานอนห้อง 4 คนอยู่ ซื้อเตียงเดียวถูกสุดแล้ว โชคดีห้องเราไม่เต็ม มีแค่ 3 คน เราแชร์ห้องกับ ผญ เยอรมันและสวิส ห้องดีค่ะ มีทีวีที่เราไม่ได้เปิดเลย ห้องน้ำก็ดีมาก ชอบตรงน้ำกินได้ เรือแจกขวดน้ำให้ แล้วหลังจากนั้นเติมกันเอาเอง ไม่ขายน้ำขวด ทั้งเรือทุกก๊อกดื่มได้หมด อีกอย่างคือบนเรือไม่มีการใช้เงินสด จะเป็นการตื้ดบัตรเอา เหมือนบัตรประจำตัว หมดทริปจ่ายทีเดียว บัตรนี้จะใช้สแกนเข้าออกด้วย ขึ้น/ลงเรือ ห้ามลืมสแกนบัตรเด็ดขาด ไม่งั้นเค้าต้องมานั่งประกาศหา วันแรกถ้าลืมยังประกาศเป็นเบอร์ห้อง วันหลังๆ ประกาศชื่อเลยจ้า รู้จักกันหมดทั้งเรือแล้วด้วย อายไปเลย ขำๆนะ

  

Landing Days 
Day 1: Orne Harbour + Cuverville Island + camping at Paradise Bay
มีความสุขมาก ในที่สุดก็ถึงAntarctica…ครบ 7 ทวีปแล้วค่ะ นอกจาก penguin แล้วก็วิวที่สวยมากๆ วันนี้ได้ว่ายน้ำด้วยนะ ทำไปได้ยังไงไม่รู้ polar plunge นำ้ 0° เกือบช็อคตาย มือเท้าชาไปหมด ดีนะที่เค้าเตรียมเรือรอ แล้วใจดีไม่รอคนอื่นเอาเรากลับก่อนเลย ไม่งั้น hypotermia แน่ เล่นน้ำเป็นตอนช่วงบ่ายนะคะ ที่ Cuverville Island ช่วงเช้าไปเดินเขาที่ Orne Harbour ตอนเดินขึ้นก็ก้มหน้าก้มตาเดินกันขึ้นไป ตอนลง slide ลงมาเลยจ้า สนุกมาก ข้างบนเขามีฝูง penguin ก็ไม่เข้าใจว่าทำไมต้องปีนไปขนาดนั้น จุดนี้ตรงที่ขึ้น/ลงเรือ zodiac สวยมากๆ ทั้งแสง + น้ำแข็ง perfect สุดๆ

  
  
      

     

ตอนแรกเกือบจะไม่ได้ไป camping แต่มีหนุ่มยกที่ให้ 555+ คือใครจะไปวันนี้ห้ามดื่มเหล้า นางดื่มมาทั้งวัน เลยอด เห็นเราบ่น งอแง มา 3 วัน ว่าอยากไปๆ เลยสละที่ แล้วบอกให้ยกให้นี่ไปแทน ต้องขอบคุณเค้ามากจริงๆ ไม่งั้นชาตินี้ไม่รู้จะมีโอกาสได้นอนบนทวีปนี้ไหม มันเจ๋งสุดๆเลยนะ การที่ได้นอนข้างๆ penguins + seals นอนในถุงนอน ไม่มี tent ต้องขึดหลุมให้ตัวเองอยู่ ห้องน้ำไม่ต้องพูดถึง ไม่ต้องเข้าดีสุด ใครอยากไปรีบจองนะ พวกนี้เค้าจองก่อนเป็นปี เรา waitlist อยู่คนที่ 9 เป็นคนสุดท้ายพอดี

      

Day 2: Brown Base + Le Maire Channel
วันนี้เหนื่อยมากลากยาวตั้งตี 5 ถึงตี3 วันรุ่งขึ้นเลย คือหมดแรงค่ะ พอขึ้นเรือหลัง camping เราก็อาบน้ำ แต่งตัว กินข้าวเพื่อเริ่ม activity ของวันที่ 2 เลย stop แรกของวันคือที่ Brown Base เป็น research base ของประเทศ Argentina ก็แวะถ่ายรูปกับ penguin กันไป แล้วก็ไปต่อด้วย zodiac cruising

คือทุก landing เค้าจะให้ผลัดกันขึ้นฝั่ง แล้วอีกครึ่งไป zodiac cruise ระหว่างนั่งเรือยางก็จะได้ดูปลาวาฬ ถ่ายรูป ice bergs แล้วก็วิวต่างๆ ถ้าเห็นแมวน้ำเค้าก็จะพยายามพาไปใกล้ๆ cruising ที่เราชอบที่สุดเลยคือตอนที่ได้เห็น penguins หาอาหาร น่ารักมาก เหมือนเป็ดลอยเต็มน้ำ เป็น 100 ตัว ได้ถ่าย vdo มาด้วย

ต่อๆ กันที่ช่วงบ่าย บ่ายวันนี้เค้ายกเลิก landing แล้วพาเข้า LeMaire Channel แทน จุดนี้ดีสุดๆ สวยมากๆ เหนือคำบรรยายเลย น่าจะหนึ่งในสถานที่ๆเราชอบมากที่สุดในโลก พระอาทิตย์ตก ณ จุดนี้คือเจ๋งมากๆๆๆๆ เราอยู่รอดูมันตก แล้วมันก็ขึ้นใหม่เลย วันนึงมืดแปปเดียวค่ะ

Day 3: Port Lockroy + Damoy Point

โชคดีที่ post office ที่ Port Lockroy เปิดพอดี เราน่าจะเป็นเรือแรกๆที่ได้เข้าไปสำหรับฤดูนี้ พนักงานจากอังกฤษเพิ่งเข้าไปถึง 5 วันก่อนหน้าเราเอง ที่นี่เราได้ส่ง postcards ด้วยนะ เค้าบอกว่าจะใช้เวลา 6 อาทิตย์ถึงปลายทาง จดหมายจะถูกส่งไปกับเครื่องบินทหารของอังกฤษซึ่งมี base อยู่ที่ Falkland Islands หลังจากนั้นจะเข้าสู่ระบบไปรษณีย์ของอังกฤษ ทั้งหมดที่ส่งไม่มีหาย 4 อาทิตย์ถึงอังกฤษ 6 อาทิตย์ถึงไทย

ที่ Port Lockroy มี souvenirs ขายด้วยนะ แล้วสาสมารถจ่ายเงินผ่านบัตรได้ สามารถใช้เงิน £€$ ได้ นอกจากนั้นยังมี stamp ไว้ให้ stamp passport ด้วย

ช่วงบ่ายเราไปกันที่ Damøy Point เราชอบ zodiac cruising ที่นี่ที่สุด แล้วก็ชอบ landing ด้วย จากจุดลงเรือ ต้องเดินเข้าไปอีกประมาณ 15-20นาที ถึงจะถึง historical hut ที่ตอนนี้ penguin ได้เอาไปทำลัง ข้างหน้าบ้านจะมีหาดให้เดินเล่น มี penguins เต็มไปหมด แสงสะท้อนตรงนี้ดีเลยแหละ ถ่ายรูปสวยค่ะ

Day 4: Deception Island + South Shetland Islands

วันสุดท้ายแล้ว ไม่อยากกลับเลย เช้านี้ตื่นมาเป็นวันแรกที่อากาศไม่ค่อยดี ฟ้าปิด ทางเรือเลยประกาศว่าใครดูแลตัวเองไม่ได้อย่าลงเรือ เพราะคลื่นลมแรงมาก เลยยกเลิกไม่มี zodiac cruise มีแต่ขึ้นฝั่งไปบนเกาะที่เกิดจากภูเขาไฟ ที่จริงตรงน้ำทะเลนั้นคือป่องภูเขาไฟนะคะ พอดีมีทางเข้าเลยเอาเรือผ่านช่องแคบเข้าไปได้

จุดนี้ลมแรงมากจริง แล้วก็ฝนเริ่มตก ทาง expedition crew ให้ใส่ life vest เอาไว้เลย ถ้าอากาศแย่ลง เราต้องสามารถวิ่งกลับ แล้วกระโดดขึ้น zodiac ได้ทันที ไม่มีการเสียเวลามานั่งใส่ชูชีพ

Landing ที่สองที่ South Shetland Islands อากาศกลับมาปกติ แต่ฟ้ายังเทาๆ จุดนี้สัตว์เยอะมาก มี elephant seals เต็มไปหมด แล้วก็มี leopard seal แอบมาว่ายวนๆรอบ zodiac ด้วย น้องหน้าตาดุมาก ดูร้ายๆ น้องว่ายไปมาแล้วก็ออกไปหา penguin กินต่อ ณ จัดนี้คือไม่มีใครอยากกลับเลย พอถึงเวลาต้องขึ้นเรือ เราขอขึ้น zodiac สุดท้าย ดีใจนะที่ได้มา แต่ก็เศร้าที่ต้องกลับแล้ว

ทริปนี้เราได้เขียนบันทึกทุกวัน เขียนเป็นภาษาอังกฤษจะลงไว้ให้อ่านนะคะ

Nov 24: 7.30am wakeup call here on Hondius’ PA system…not sure if I’m on holiday or summer camp ? Bfast served for an hour between 8-9am. 9.30am briefing about the trip and the landings over four days in Antarctica. (We got to Drake Passage around 1am last night and thats when I started feeling the waves)

During the day there’s not much to do other than listen to the two lectures at 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Lectures were about seabirds and whales. Oceanwide Expedition have an open bridge policy on their ships, so I spent an hour between lectures bird watching (albatross and petrel) from the bridge. Tried my best to not disturb the captain and their team. ??

6.30pm is for daily briefing about the next day and recap of the wildlife seen during the day journey. 7.30pm is dinner time – 4 courses coming up.

Wifi is €150 for 500mb.

Nov 25: another 7.30am wakeup kind of day ? 8-9am breakfast which I skipped. Planned to stay in bed til 10am, however, the staff came into clean the room. And since they only clean rooms in the morning, i had no choice but to get up.

10.30am biosecurity check. All outer layers were scrubbed and vacuumed. So they do this by deck since its total chaos to get 170 people to do anything at once. Buffet lunch was at 12.30pm..right before the 1.30pm camping briefing. The rest of the day was spent chilling with new friends…most of them guys as usual.

Its a pity that I won’t get to go camping since I booked this trip so late. There’s only one camping night for 32 people…and these people booked 1.5-2 years in advanced. I’m number 9 down on the waitlist, hopefully, enough people will cancel tomorrow after the long day with two landings. Can’t wait to finally walk on Antarctica tomorrow!

Nov 26: the most amazing 6.45am wakeup call today with a “Welcome to Antarctica”. Not much to say other day it was a spectacular day out here on my 7th continent. ??

We did two landings – the first one for a hike to see penguins and view over the bay. And the second at Cuverville Island for a huge penguin colony and the POLAR PLUNGE!! I can’t believe I ran into the Antarctic sea. The water is 0°c!!!

8.30pm disembarked for the camping at Paradise Bay. What an epic experience!

Nov 27: first stop in Paradise bay at the the Argentinian research station. Second landing site was cancelled so we can cruise through the LeMaire channel. This channel is one of my favorite place on Earth! The sunset there was nothing short of spectacular. Amazing lights, colors and reflections. It as awesome as well that we had a BBQ dinner and some dancing at the back of the Hondius.

Nov 28: Today we visited Port Lockroy where I sent out a few postcards from the most southern postoffice. Its a British base so the mail will go to Falkland Islands before going on a military aircraft to the UK where it’ll go through the Royal Mail system. The postman said it’ll take 4-6 weeks to reach its destination. Our afternoon landing was at Damoy Point. The view was surreal and the 20 mins hike to the beach was totally worth it. The afternoon zodiac cruising is my favorite so far. 360° million dollar view…panoramic in every direction. We were told that we’re lucky with the weather as this is the best it has been this season.

Although its been early wakeup calls everyday, I can’t complain. The days are long and action packed – I love every moment here. Totally worth all the $$$$.

Wildlife spotted: Wedell seal, penguins, humpback whale, minke whale

Nov 29: last day on the Antarctic Peninsula…we’ll be crossing back into the Drake Passage tonight. Fingers crossed for calm sea the next two days.

We woke up with a very interesting wakeup call from Bill, 75 yo, ex art professor. He’s an awesome member of the expedition crew. This morning we were also greeted (finally) by the real Antarctic weather – wind, rain/snow, and waves. So it was annouced that anyone who are not capable of embarking/disembarking the zodiacs themselves should not go to Deception island. Conditions weren’t super rough but there were waves and it wasn’t the normal cruise ride. The cool part about this landing is that it was formed about 40 years ago with the last volcanic eruption. MV Hondius cruised right inside the caldera and floated in the middle while we landed on the the shore of Telefon bay.

Our afternoon landing was at Walker bay in the shetland islands. Plenty of wildlif including leopard seal, elephant seals, chinstrap penguins, and gentoo penguins. There were also some flora as well which is extremely rare in the South Pole.

สรุปได้ว่าทริปนี้ดีมาก สวย ฟิน อากาศดี สัตว์น่ารัก ได้เพื่อนใหม่เพียบ คุ้มมากๆค่ะ แนะนำเลย ทวีปนี้ต้องโดนสักครั้งในชีวิต ใครอยากไป ติดต่อเราได้เลยค่ะ ดีลไว้แล้ว =] ราคาจะเบาลงหน่อยนะคะ เราหวังว่าสักวันเราจะได้กลับไปอีกนะ
